September 2026 – Adoption Update

£6,500 in the Rain, and Homes for Edam and Gonzo

The bank holiday weekend brought the curtain down on our busiest summer in years, and what a way to finish. The Summer Fair and Dog Show is the biggest date in our calendar, and this year it was also the wettest, but you turned out anyway.

August was a good month on the rehoming side too. Thirteen animals left us for new homes, the kittens we told you about last month have made a full recovery and found families of their own, and the last of our Pomeranians are now properly settled.

Here’s everything that happened…

🎪 Thank You for Making the Summer Fair Such a Success

Let’s start with the important bit. The Summer Fair and Dog Show raised £6,500 for the animals in our care.

Saturday was, to put it kindly, a washout. Plenty of people would have been forgiven for staying at home, which makes the final figure all the more remarkable. It is entirely down to those who came along anyway, wellies on, dogs in tow, and made a proper weekend of it. We saw dogs in the ball pit, over the hurdles and winning rosettes, talks from Gloucestershire Constabulary, and vendors from all over selling treats, collars, leads, cakes and art.

Thank you to everyone who came through the gates, and to the stallholders, sponsors, vendors, entertainers and volunteers who set up in the rain on Friday and packed down in it again on Sunday. Thank you too to everyone who donated raffle and tombola prizes. You can see the full thank you on Facebook.

And a special mention to Polita Photography for the photos from the weekend.

If you’d like to order any of the shots of your own dog, the galleries are online for Saturday and Sunday, and a percentage of every order comes back to Teckels.

Every penny of that £6,500 goes straight back into food, bedding, warmth and veterinary care for the dogs and cats who need us.

📅 Dates for the Diary

🥂 Next Up: The Teckels Winter Ball, Saturday 21 November

With the Fair behind us, our attention turns to the Winter Ball, and tickets are on sale now.

Join us at the Mercure Gloucester Bowden Hall Hotel from 7pm until midnight for a black tie evening of three courses, wine on the table, live music, a magician working the room, a photobooth and a charity auction. A few of our rescue dogs will be there to meet guests too.

Tickets are £60 each. If you’d like to book a full table, for a work Christmas do or a group of friends, just get in touch and we’ll sort it for you.

It’s the biggest fundraising night of our year, so book sooner rather than later.

🐾 Adoption Update

Five dogs and eight cats found their forever homes in August.

🚨 Stray Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation

We also took in 21 strays. Twelve were reunited with their owners, which is always the outcome we hope for.

Seven moved on to partner rescues where the right home was waiting, and two have stayed with us and are now in our care.

📢 Teckels Needs You!

We’ve got three volunteer roles open at the moment, and no experience is needed for any of them:

🐱 Edam and Gonzo Beat the Odds

If you read last month’s update, you’ll remember the litter of kittens who arrived with a nasty case of cat flu, and the fortnight of round-the-clock care that followed.

We were honest with you at the time that it was touch and go. Sadly, not all of the litter pulled through, and that is the hardest part of this work. But Edam and Gonzo fought it off completely, made a full recovery, and in August both were adopted into new homes of their own.

Cat flu is miserable and it moves fast through a young litter. The nursing, the medication and the isolation space that gave these two a fighting chance are all things your support pays for. Edam and Gonzo are what that looks like, and as you can see, they’re doing brilliantly.

🐶 The Poms Are All Settled

Our Pomeranians have been part of these updates since the spring, so it’s lovely to tell you that every one of them is now settled and thriving.

Podge, renamed Dolly Bella, has landed in a home with two Pomeranians already in residence, and the pair of them have taken it upon themselves to show her the ropes.

Pepper, who some of you will remember was still looking for a home when we wrote last month, has found one, and is out enjoying new walks and a life that looks nothing like the one she had before she came to us. Peanut (picture 3 above), by all accounts, is being thoroughly spoilt.

All three families tell us they’re smitten.

Considering the condition these dogs arrived in and the dental work, grooming and veterinary care it took to get them ready, this is a proper result for the whole team.

Demand for Relinquishing Animals

Just like July, we’ve seen an increasing number of people seeking to relinquish animals in need.

In August, we received over 100 calls and emails from individuals looking to rehome dogs and 90 for cats.

We know that for many families, giving up a pet is a last resort – and we’re doing what we can to help keep animals in their homes.

Our charity shop in Stroud offers low-cost pet items to ease the financial burden of pet ownership.

Teckels’ commitment to helping animals in need – whether that’s finding them loving homes or helping them stay in the ones they have – remains unwavering.

Help Us to Keep Saying Yes

Every day at Teckels, we care for around 50 rescue animals. Dogs and cats who’ve been neglected, abandoned, or simply have nowhere else to go.

With your support, we rehome around 250 animals a year and rescue over 160 strays. Those we can’t reunite with their owners, we find loving new homes for.

We never put a healthy animal down. And we never turn away an animal in need if we have the space to help.

But as demand grows, so do our costs. More strays. More relinquishments. More animals arriving in worse condition than ever before.

Your donation helps cover the essentials that keep our doors open: food, shelter, warmth and veterinary care. It means we can keep saying yes when animals need us most.

Thank you for being part of the Teckels family. 💚

With gratitude,

The Teckels Team 🐾
