June 2026 – Adoption Update

A Happy Ending for Mabel, and Frank’s Road to Recovery

We hope you had a lovely May. As ever, it’s been non-stop here at Teckels, with a full house, plenty of comings and goings, and more than a few happy endings to share with you this month.

It also turned properly warm, didn’t it? We had a real heatwave over half-term and the bank holiday weekend, and there’s another one forecast for this week.

Our lovely lot have been making the most of it, claiming every shady spot going and flopping out like they haven’t a care in the world.

The heat does bring its own challenges, though, for our animals and yours alike, so before we get into the month’s news, here are a few simple reminders for keeping your pets safe and comfortable when the temperature climbs.

☀️ Keeping Pets Cool in the Heat

  • Walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening, when both the air and the pavement are cooler.
  • Try the five-second test: if the pavement is too hot for the back of your hand, it’s too hot for paws.
  • Never leave a dog in a car, even for a few minutes and even with the windows cracked open.
  • Make sure there’s always fresh water and plenty of shade available, indoors and out.
  • Keep an eye on cats too, and check sheds and greenhouses before shutting them, in case anyone has crept in for a snooze.
  • Know the signs of heatstroke: heavy panting, drooling, lethargy or unsteadiness on their feet. If you spot them, cool your pet down gradually and call your vet straight away.

📅 Dates for the Diary

☀️ The Teckels Summer Show

Our Summer Show is fast approaching!

Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th August 2026 (Bank Holiday Weekend)

It’s one of our biggest events of the year, with a fun dog show, stalls from local makers and sellers, refreshments, games, raffles and plenty more. Whether you’re a regular or it’s your first time, it’s a brilliant day out for the whole family.

More details here.

Stallholders Wanted

We’d love to fill the field with brilliant stalls for hundreds of animal-loving visitors!

We’re especially keen to hear from:

  • Pet stalls (leads, collars and accessories)
  • Plant stalls
  • Local crafters

We’re also collecting tombola prizes, so if you have anything you’d be happy to donate, we’d be enormously grateful.

To book a stall or donate a prize, get in touch at info@teckelsanimalsanctuaries.co.uk.

Spaces filled up fast last year, so don’t leave it too late.

Save the Date – The Teckels Christmas Charity Ball

A little further ahead, our Christmas Charity Ball returns on Saturday 21st November at the beautiful Bowden Hall, Upton St Leonards. A wonderful evening in a stunning setting, and a lovely option for a Christmas party with a difference.

Bowden Hall, Upton St Leonards, Gloucester

🐾 Adoption Update

Last month we found loving new homes for 7 dogs and 2 cats.

Every one of them is now settling in with their new families, which is exactly what it’s all about.

🚨 Stray Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation

Another busy month for strays. 23 stray dogs came through our doors in May:

  • 10 were reclaimed by their owners
  • 10 were moved to partner rescues
  • 3 became Teckels’ own and we’ll be working hard to rehabilitate and rehome them.

🐕 Mabel’s Happy Ending

You may remember Mabel from last month’s update. She arrived with her litter of ten puppies after raising them almost single-handedly, and we promised you her full story this time around.

We’re delighted to say every single one of Mabel’s pups has now found a forever home. And here’s the lovely twist: Mabel found hers too, and for once, mum was adopted before all of her babies had left.

At only one to two years old, Mabel is barely more than a pup herself.

After the incredible job she did of raising ten babies, she can finally rest, play, and simply enjoy being a dog. She’s now settled in her new home alongside her new lurcher sister, and having been spayed, there’ll be no more litters for this hard-working mum.

A very well-earned retirement.

🐶 Frank’s Recovery

Many of you have followed Frank’s journey closely, so we know you’ll be glad to hear he’s recovering well following his surgery. He’s being beautifully cared for in his foster home, with his foster mum and his feline friend keeping him company every step of the way.

It hasn’t been without sadness. Frank’s foster companion, a border terrier called Bumblebee, recently passed away, and she’s been much missed by everyone who knew her.

Frank has a check-up next week, and so far everything is looking positive.

Thank you again to everyone who helped get him to this point.

If you’d still like to contribute towards Frank’s ongoing rehabilitation and care, you can do so below.

🐾 Our Pomeranians: From Rescue to Ready for Home

You may remember the group of Pomeranians we told you about last month. A large number had been surrendered together, and with several rescues stepping in to help, Teckels made space for eight of them. They arrived needing a great deal of care. Seven of the eight required dental work, several with multiple extractions, and a few had to be shaved due to severe matting.

We also said a sad goodbye to Penelope, our elderly girl of nearly 14, who we kept comfortable and loved in her final days. And there was a surprise in store too, in the shape of Pepper, who arrived heavily pregnant and went on to need a caesarean to safely deliver her two boys, Gherkin and Pickle.

A month on, we’re pleased to say the Poms have come on wonderfully. Their operations are now well underway, with dentals, spays and neuters all being worked through, and they’re looking and feeling so much better for it.

It hasn’t all been good news, though.

We were heartbroken to lose one of Pepper’s two boys after he developed a suspected heart condition. It was a hard blow for everyone who had watched the little ones grow, and our thoughts are very much with the team who cared for him.

The happier news is that many of the Poms are now reserved and will be heading off to their new homes very shortly. A few are still looking for the right family, so if one of these little characters has caught your eye, you can find those still available here.

Demand for Relinquishing Animals

Just like April, we’ve seen an increasing number of people seeking to relinquish animals in need.

In May, we received over 100 calls and emails from individuals looking to rehome dogs and 90 for cats.

We know that for many families, giving up a pet is a last resort – and we’re doing what we can to help keep animals in their homes.

Our pet food bank supports those struggling to feed their pets, and our charity shop in Stroud offers low-cost pet items to ease the financial burden of pet ownership.

Teckels’ commitment to helping animals in need – whether that’s finding them loving homes or helping them stay in the ones they have – remains unwavering.

Help Us to Keep Saying Yes

To our volunteers, fosterers, donors, boarding clients, charity shop customers and everyone who supports Teckels, thank you.

Every penny, every hour, every share makes a difference.

If you’d like to help make more happy endings possible, please consider making a donation today.

Thank you for being part of the Teckels family. 💚

With gratitude,

The Teckels Team 🐾
