Spring Days & Wagging Tails 🐾
April is here, the sun has made a few appearances (a one-day heatwave), and we’ve even managed a couple of dog walks without wellies. Progress!
It’s been a busy month at Teckels, with some lovely rehoming stories, a growing number of animals coming through our doors, and one very special little sausage dog who needs your help.

🐾 Adoption Update
March was a quieter month on the rehoming front, but every one of these is a happy ending worth celebrating.
4 dogs and 5 cats found their forever homes.

🚨 Stray Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation
Stray numbers remain incredibly high.
In March, 29 strays came through our doors:
10 were claimed by their owners, 16 were moved to partner rescues, and 3 became Teckels’ own.
Frank, the poor little sausage dog, was one of them.
Every stray that comes through our doors needs assessment, veterinary care and time. It’s a significant part of what we do, and your support helps make it possible.
💔 A Growing Need
Alongside strays, we’ve continued to see an increasing number of animals coming to us due to bereavement. It’s one of the saddest reasons a pet ends up in rescue, through no fault of their own.
Some of these dogs are already on our website looking for homes, with more due to go on very soon.
If you’re thinking about adopting, please keep an eye on our rehoming pages.
🐾 Meet Frank – The Little Sausage Dog Who Needs Your Help
Some of you may already know Frank. His story has been shared widely over the past few weeks, and the support has been incredible. But he still needs your help.
Frank is a one-year-old dachshund who arrived at Teckels as a stray. Like so many dogs who come through the pound system, his medical needs had been completely neglected. He’s only a year old, but he’s already been through more than any dog should.
X-rays revealed a badly broken ankle that had never been treated. Over time, the break fused, leaving Frank unable to bend his leg. His back has been compensating ever since, straining under the effort of keeping the leg from dragging along the ground.
Our vets have assessed every option. The only way to give Frank a pain-free future is to amputate the affected leg.
Frank’s surgery date is now booked. To keep costs as low as possible, our vets will carry out his neutering at the same time as the amputation, because we’re always mindful of how every pound donated to Teckels is spent.
The total cost of Frank’s surgery is around £2,000.
Here’s the thing about Frank, though. He doesn’t know any of this. He’s one of the happiest, most affectionate little dogs we’ve ever had through our doors. He greets everyone like they’re his favourite person. His tail doesn’t stop. Somehow, despite everything he’s been through, none of it has dimmed his spirit.
Frank became one of Teckels’ own after arriving as a stray in March. Nobody claimed him. Nobody came looking. So we stepped in, and now we’re asking you to step in too.
Every donation, no matter how small, goes directly toward giving this little boy the pain-free life he deserves.
Derek & Rodney – The Brothers Who Found Their Family
Derek and Rodney came to Teckels when their owner experienced financial difficulties and had to move house, sadly meaning he couldn’t take them along.
They were quite shy when they arrived and took a little time to build trust, but the cattery team worked hard with them and both boys made great progress. They were neutered and vaccinated during their stay, and it wasn’t long before the right family came along. They were with us less than a month.
The update from their new family says it all. Derek, once the shy one, is now confidently sprawled out on his favourite blue mat. Rodney is always ready for cuddles. After just a couple of days settling into their cat room, both boys were trying to come out and explore the rest of the house. They’re getting more confident every day, purring loudly, and very much living their best lives.
From a difficult start to a loving home. That’s what your support makes possible.
Coconut (now Bea) – From Abandoned Puppy to Family Favourite
Coconut arrived at Teckels as a local stray. She was only around seven weeks old, very timid, and had obviously not seen much of the world. We don’t know how anyone could have abandoned her.
The team took time to build her confidence before finding her a new home, and the transformation has been remarkable.
Her new family say the difference between the unsettled, zoomy puppy on her first Friday night and the dog she is now is like chalk and cheese.
She’s already learned to sit, lie down, and give her paw, and she’s getting there with learning to wait.
She’s settled into the family routine, from playful training sessions during the day to cuddles on the sofa in the evenings. She’s had her second vaccine and is about to start exploring her new area properly.
As her family put it: “She is fitting in like she has always been here.”
Demand for Relinquishing Animals
Just like February, we’ve seen an increasing number of people seeking to relinquish animals in need.
In March, we received over 100 calls and emails from individuals looking to rehome dogs and 90 for cats.
We know that for many families, giving up a pet is a last resort – and we’re doing what we can to help keep animals in their homes.
Our pet food bank supports those struggling to feed their pets, and our charity shop in Stroud offers low-cost pet items to ease the financial burden of pet ownership.
Teckels’ commitment to helping animals in need – whether that’s finding them loving homes or helping them stay in the ones they have – remains unwavering.
Help us Continue Our Mission.
To our volunteers, fosterers, donors, boarding clients, charity shop customers and everyone who supports Teckels, thank you.
Every penny, every hour, every share makes a difference.
If you’d like to help make more happy endings possible, please consider making a donation today.
With love and gratitude,
The Teckels Team
